One cold winter Sunday afternoon without saying a word, I sat down at the dinning room table with stack of paper and a handful of pencil crayons I found in the junk drawer. While all the kids milled around the house I quietly sat and drew pictures, (cars of course). One by one they all gathered and joined in on the activity. It was a fascinating day. My youngest son Nick called out to Mitch, "Hey Mitch dad just drew a Camaro without looking at a picture." This really had Mitchell's attention, I asked "What's your favorite car?" and with his reply I proceeded to draw it. The rest of that afternoon and for days after the house was a frenzy of drawing.
Art by Mitchell Thibeault
A few days later Mitch said something that made me very happy. "Dad I'm going to learn all the things you know so I can help you." Wow, I was touched and will never forget those words. He's sixteen years old now and three short years later he's up to speed in art and will be a excellent mechanic by the time he's twenty years old.
Mitchell purchased his first car, a 1982 Mazda RX7 rolling chassis. We picked it up in London, Ontario and dragged it home. Like most young guys these days he's into drifting. With lots of spare Ford 5.0 parts around we've decided to convert this old rotary into 5.0 ltr. Ford. I could see the excitement in his eyes and could hear his mind churning with ideas, all along thinking, Another project I really didn't have time for. But to my surprise and to this date Mitch has done all the work himself. My roll has been just to advise him and give him direction on the process....a proud dad.
to be continued.
